Project Description
The wastewater infrastructure has several components that
require an assessment of the risk and resilience to maintain reliability. Among
them are pump stations. As a City, Newport News relies on HRSD to provide major
sewage collection and treatment, but Newport News is responsible for the local
sewer system and the pump stations. The City owns and operates over 190 pump
stations with additional ones programmed in the future. Failure of any of these
stations could result in environmental damage, a health hazard, disruption to
the public, and costs to businesses. It could also result in permit violation
and fines. The degree of risk is dependent on the type and severity of the
event whether it is a flooding issue, power failure, severe storm, a natural
hazard, or a combination of multiple simultaneous events.
