Project Description
The project provides waterfront access to the James Riverin Newport News Virginia, provides development and recreational opportunity inan economically depressed area of the City. The area at the end of 23rd Streetmeets the James River; however, the bulkhead area currently lacks the abilityto facilitate access to the Yard District and other nearby attractions by theboating public. Project funding will provide ADA-compliant floating docks andnearby restrooms to transform this area into a visitor access area by way ofwater for the many boaters that travel the James River and recreate in theHampton Roads Harbor area. Publicboating access would be a great addition to the City’s ongoing revitalizationefforts of a once bustling and vibrant urban Downtown area. Along with the parkimprovements currently underway, creating waterfront access would contribute tothe development of an area that includes restaurants, a brewery, and multiplecommunity parks, including a waterfront park under renovation that will serveas a special event venue with walking trails and an outdoor amphitheater. Thisrevitalization project aims to transform the area into a destination locationthat attracts residents from across the City and surrounding municipalities.The project provides waterfront access to the James Riverin Newport News Virginia, provides development and recreational opportunity inan economically depressed area of the City.
